What does 'Farm to Fork' mean?

Farm to Fork is a movement focused on connecting consumers with all stages of food production - from growing, to harvesting to processing to consuming. At Three Farmers, we strive to provide this personal connection between our farmers and our customers by implementing traceability. Rather than just making a claim on the label, we want to show our customers where their food came from and what the process was in creating it. We want everyone to take a front row seat in the creation of their food and be able to reach us with the questions that they have about its production. That’s why we have made it possible to simply enter your product code and find out exactly who made your Three Farmers product and where.

Did You Know?

All of Canada’s prairie provinces have the right soil and climate to grow pulse products but right here in Saskatchewan, we grow more than 80% of all Canadian grown chickpeas! To give you an idea of how much that really is, in 2020 alone Canada exported 6.7 million tonnes of pulses worth more than $4.5 billion!

How they're grown...

Your chickpeas were seeded in May and harvested in August! Timing is very important when harvesting chickpeas as an over ripened crop can lead to decrease in yield while harvesting a crop too young may lead to increased chance of green seed in the crop which yields a lower grade.

Chickpeas are typically straight cut, meaning they are not swathed before combining. Read more on our blog about some of the challenges in farming and how we at Three Farmers tackle them in a responsible and sustainable manner.

How they're made...

When it comes to harvesting our chickpeas, our farmers are experts in ensuring the timing is just right to get them off the field to get that high yield and quality crop. Once they are harvested and ready for production, we start out by roasting our chickpeas like how you would at home. Except we do it on a much larger scale in our food grade facility in Keeler, SK.

Fried or oil roasted chickpeas can have a chalky texture, so we dry roast our chickpeas; creating air pockets within the chickpea that result in that light airy crunch. And while most snacks use a refined or chemically extracted oil to blend seasoning on their products, our camelina oil is used as the binding agent - adding to the health benefits of this tasty snack!

Then the freshly roasted chickpeas are shipped to a chocolate factory, CFX, in St. Davids, Ontario, Canada – right in the heart of Niagara-On-The-Lake’s wine region. At CFX, using artisanal chocolate panning and molding techniques with the finest cocoa beans, the roasted chickpeas are small batch crafted to combine irresistible crunch with the decadent richness of dark chocolate.

Lastly, we package up our decadent dark chocolate roasted chickpeas and get them ready for distribution at a local Regina based company. From Regina, our dark chocolate roasted chickpeas are then shipped off and ready for store shelves all over Canada!

We take pride in providing locally grown products that taste good and are good for you. Thank you for taking the time to trace the journey of your roasted chickpeas from our farms to your table.

FACT: Pulses such as chickpeas have an extremely low water footprint. They grow in dry land agriculture and utilize very little water compared to traditional crops such as wheat.
